K-9 Nabs Burglary Suspect In Fountain Valley

A K-9 police officer nabbed a 19 year old suspect off Caribou in Fountain Valley Monday. One suspect remains at large, cops say.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA — A Fountain Valley neighborhood was disrupted Monday afternoon as police received reports of an interrupted burglary. At approximately 2:30 p.m. Fountain Valley officers responded to the call of a resident who interrupted a burglary in their home on the 16000 block of Caribou Street.

"The residents stated that one suspect leapt a fence into a neighboring yard while another fled in a gray BMW" Fountain Valley police said.

The resident confirmed to police that a handgun had been stolen, along with other items, from the home during the burglary.

An hours long search of the neighborhood ensued, both on the ground and from the air. Multiple agencies, including Orange County Sheriffs Department and Huntington Beach police department assisted during the search.

K-9 officers were brought to the backyard where OCSD's DUKE helicopter determined the suspect was hiding, and proceeded to secure the first suspect.

19-year-old Leon Shillingford of Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of the burglary, and was taken to the hospital for treatment of the K-9 officer's bite, police said.

A second suspect, seen wearing red pants, fled the scene.

Officers were able to locate the stolen handgun and other property that had been taken after Shillingford's arrest, reports said. The items were discovered in a neighboring yard.

The investigation is ongoing, cops say.
