It's Not My Time: Woman, Daughter Escape Being Hit by Elderly Driver near Fountain Valley

SANTA ANA, CA—Patricia Gonzalez and 4-year-old child are lucky to be alive today after being narrowly missed by a speeding driver. The two were walking in a crosswalk on South Greenville Street when an 81-year-old driver came speeding through the "t" intersection without stopping. He then crashed his SUV into a Santa Ana residence, slamming through a fence and a pole and into a house.

"Today is not my time," she told KCAL9 in an interview today following the accident.

The driver was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.

The driver was westbound on St. Gertrude Place just before 10:45 a.m. when he went through a stop sign at South Greenville Street, narrowly missing Gonzales and her 4-year-old child, and slammed through a fence and pole and into a house, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

"(Gonzales) and her daughter were in the crosswalk," he said. The driver did not stop, and slammed through a fence and pole and into a house. "I just returned from the scene, and it's a mess."

"In the house there was a 20-year-old woman and her two children, but fortunately they are OK," Bertangna said.

The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in critical condition.

"He has major injuries," Bertagna said.

The driver was trapped in the front seat, with pieces of the metal fence sticking through window, piercing his neck, according to KCAL9.

Witnesses told Channel 9 that the SUV was traveling at least 60 mph when it blew through the T-intersection.

Authorities were trying to determine if the driver may have had a medical emergency prior to the crash.
