Los Amigos Returns to Winning Ways, 38-0

Los Amigos, which began its season 3-0 but lost last week to Irvine, takes it out on Santa Ana behind the rushing of Jerry Saldivar and the passing of Danny Hernandez.

Junior running back Jerry Saldivar rushed for 117 yards and four touchdowns to lead Los Amigos to a 38-0 nonleague football victory over Santa Ana on Thursday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

The Lobos (4-1) took control early and scored on their first four possessions to take a 28-0 lead by halftime. Late in the second quarter, Los Amigos started a drive at the Saints' 44-yard line after their defense forced a punt from near the end zone.

Senior quarterback Danny Hernandez hit senior running back Felix Cruz for a 15-yard gain and, four plays later, Saldivar barreled in from five yards to give the Lobos the 28-0 advantage.

The Lobos kept the Saints (0-4) backed up against their own end zone for most of the first half. Earlier in the second quarter, the Lobos started a drive at the Saints’ 36-yard line. In only six plays, Hernandez hit Cruz in the left flat and Cruz did the rest, fighting for a 12-yard touchdown to give the Lobos a 21-0 lead.

After suffering a 23-9 loss to Irvine last week, Lobos coach Carl Agnew said his team focused on executing the game plan. "We really focused on execution all week in practice, just executing no matter what, and it really worked for us,” he said.

After taking the second-half kickoff, the Lobos drove 63 yards for a three-yard touchdown run by Saldivar to put them up 35-0. On Santa Ana’s ensuing possession, Hernandez intercepted a pass on defense to give the Lobos possession before being pulled from the game. Hernandez finished with 139 yards passing.

The Lobos have a bye week before opening Garden Grove League play against the defending league and CIF-Southern Section Southern Division champion Garden Grove Argonauts at Garden Grove High on Oct. 13.

The Argonauts are off this week, but are only 1-3 heading into their final nonleague game next week against El Toro. Still, the Lobos are not going to take them lightly. "There’s a lot of things we need to work on," Hernandez said. "We just want to prepare, we don’t want to lose to them. I just want to finally beat them.”

Agnew said his team is going into league healthy and with some momentum after bouncing back from their only loss of the season. "Four-and-one going into Grove, you can’t be any happier than that," he said. "I think we’re ready, I think the kids are ready to play."
