Man Run Over By His Own Motorhome on 405 Freeway

A 74-year-old man was killed when he was somehow run over by his own vehicle on the 405 Freeway.

COSTA MESA, CA - The 74-year-old man found dead on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Costa Mesa was run over by his own motorhome, the California Highway Patrol reported today.

"We're still investigating the reason why (the victim) was outside his motor home," said CHP Officer Paul Fox. "He may have been fixing something."

The man was found about 4:45 p.m. Monday by a Freeway Service Patrol driver who stopped at the scene south of Fairview Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. An autopsy was pending.

The man was run over by a rear tire on the vehicle but it was unclear if the vehicle had rolled forward or backward, said Fox.

The victim was the only person associated with the vehicle found at the scene, according to the officer.

Fox described the victim as the owner and driver of the motor home.

Three northbound freeway lanes were closed while an investigation was conducted. Anyone with information on the death was urged to contact the CHP's Santa Ana Area office at (714) 567-6000.
