Police: Pipe Bomb Causes Explosion at Santa Ana Hardware Store

An explosion rocked a home improvement store on 17th Street in Santa Ana Wednesday, but no one was hurt, police said.

The explosion at Orchard Supply Hardware at 1975 E. 17th St. happened about 9 a.m., Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Investigators found what appear to be the remnants of a pipe bomb at the scene, he said.

Witnesses told police the explosion was near the store's exit, Bertagna said.

"A customer walking in hears the clanking of metal hitting the ground, then hears some hissing, then boom, and then smoke," he said.

Police evacuated the area around the shopping center, and a bomb squad was summoned, Bertagna said.
