6-Car Pileup Snarls North 405

A mattress in lanes may have caused the accident, witnesses say.

Officers were on the scene of a six-vehicle pileup Tuesday night on the north 405 Freeway, just north of Harbor Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers received a report of an accident blocking all lanes at about 7:51 p.m. The CHP alerted the Costa Mesa Fire Department, and a CHP officer arrived on a scene about 8:01 p.m.

The officer blocked off the three right lanes, according to a CHP dispatcher.

Some witnesses told an officer that a pickup truck had dropped a mattress and caused the accident, but the officer couldn’t find the item, and the report remains unconfirmed.

It's unknown if there were any injuries, but no one has been listed as transported to a nearby hospital as of press time.

Officials sent five tow trucks to the scene and were reportedly still waiting for the final tow truck as of 8:40 p.m.
