Teen Dies In DUI Chain Reaction Crash, Arrest Made: Cops

The 13-year-old San Marcos passenger died from his injuries, officials say. One was arrested for possible DUI.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA - A teenage boy died in a chain reaction, roll over crash in the HOV lane of the San Diego (405) Freeway in Fountain Valley and the driver who crashed into the boy's van was arrested on suspicion of DUI, authorities said Monday.

The 13-year-old boy from San Marcos was in a silver 2015 Honda Odyssey minivan driven by a woman that became disabled about 10:50 p.m. Saturday in the HOV lane of the northbound San Diego Freeway at Euclid Street, CHP Officer G. Aguirre said.

The 24-year-old man driving a black 2014 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck crashed into the rear of the minivan, Aguirre said. A silver 2019 Toyota Tacoma then crashed into the black pickup truck.

The 13-year-old boy died from his injuries and five others in the Odyssey suffered moderate to major injuries and were hospitalized, the officer said. His name was not released because he is a juvenile, the Orange County coroner's office said.

The driver of the black Tacoma suffered major injuries and was arrested at a hospital for suspicion of DUI, Aguirre said.

Four people inside the silver Tacoma suffered minor injuries.

A SigAlert was issued at 11:17 p.m. shutting down all northbound lanes at Euclid Street and was cancelled at 2:53 a.m.
