5-Time Felon Charged In Homicide At Fremont-Newark Hotel

Three initially arrested in connection with case, but so far only Luis McLaughlin is charged in murder of Tri-City man, Sebastian Jauregui.

FREMONT, CA – A five-time felon was charged with murder Tuesday for the fatal shooting of a 48-year-old man at a hotel in Fremont late Saturday night.

Luis Ricardo McLaughlin, 34, was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court Tuesday for the death of Sebastian Jauregui and is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday to be assigned an attorney and possibly enter a plea.

Fremont police said on Sunday that three people were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Jauregui at the Extended Stay America Fremont-Newark hotel at 5375 Farwell Place but prosecutors said McLaughlin is the only person who has been charged so far. Fremont police have declined to comment on the shooting since Sunday.

Fremont police said officers who responded to a 911 call about the shooting at 11:34 p.m. on Sunday went to the hotel and found the victim, now identified by prosecutors as Jauregui, just outside the lobby.

The officers administered field trauma aid until medics arrived, and Jauregui was taken to a trauma center, but he succumbed to his injuries there, police said.

Inside a hotel room officers found a crime scene, according to police.

Investigators said the killing appeared to be an isolated incident in which the victim and suspect may have known each other.

Fremont police said the victim was a Fremont resident but Jauregui's Facebook page, which has a profile photo of him wearing a leather jacket and brandishing an assault rifle, says he lived in Union City.

Jauregui's brother, Albert Jauregui, said in a message on the social media website, "To everyone who knew my brother Seb, thank you for your kind words."

Albert Jauregui said, "My brother was a good person who didn't deserve this type of outcome but God decided it was time for my brother to come home."

He said, "I love my brother more then I can express, I won't ever forget you carnal, I'm here to bring you justice and lay you to rest in peace. May you fly with angels carnal."

Sebastian Jauregui's Facebook page indicates that he studied at WyoTech in Laramie, Wyo.

In addition to murder, McLaughlin is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of carrying a concealed firearm and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, a charge that's based on his extensive criminal history.

Prosecutors allege that McLaughlin's record dates back to 2006 and includes convictions for second-degree robbery, evading an officer, two counts of unlawfully driving or taking a vehicle and possession of a firearm
by a felon.
