Alleged Fremont Terrorist: Mistrial Declared In Federal Case

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A mistrial has been declared in the federal trial in San Francisco of a Fremont man accused of attempting to provide aid to a terrorist group in Syria, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

U.S. District Judge William Orrick declared the mistrial Tuesday afternoon in the case of Adam Shafi, U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Abraham Simmons said.

Shafi, 25, went on trial in Orrick's court on Aug. 28 on a charge of attempting to provide material support in the form of personnel -- namely, himself -- to the al-Nusrah Front, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group that has been
designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department.

He was arrested in July 2015 after federal agents stopped him from boarding a flight from San Francisco International Airport to Istanbul.

Prosecutors alleged that wiretaps indicated he was planning to go from Istanbul to Syria to join the al-Nusrah Front.

Shafi came to the attention of investigators the previous year when his father reported him missing during a family trip to Egypt. Shafi said he had gone to Istanbul for a few days to try to aid Syrian refugees.

Simmons said no decision has been made on whether prosecutors will retry Shafi.
