FREMONT, CA — Police say they arrested a man who hid in a dumpster while trying to elude officers in Fremont on Monday morning.

Officers were patrolling the area of Industrial Drive and South Grimmer Boulevard just before 8:40 a.m. when they saw 43-year-old Fortino Preciado walking by with a gun protruding from his clothes, according to the Fremont Police Department.

The officers tried stopping Preciado, but he ran away, prompting a chase, police said.

Preciado ran through a barbed wire fence and then hid in a dumpster on Pestana Court, police said.

Officers gave chase and caught up to Preciado after bystanders gave up his location, according to authorities.

Officers established a perimeter around the dumpster and told Preciado to get out, but there was no response, police said.

Eventually, officers deployed a drone and opened the dumpster lid. The aerial feed from the drone showed Preciado was inside the dumpster, police said.

Soon after, officers released a K-9 into the dumpster and got Preciado to surrender, police said.

During the arrest, officers recovered a gun from Preciado, police said, adding that the 43-year-old was on parole at the time.

The 43-year-old was taken into custody on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possessing a concealed firearm and obstructing or delaying arrest, police said.

The case against Preciado has been presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, which will decide whether there is enough evidence to charge the 43-year-old with a crime.
