FREMONT, CA — As people set out to celebrate a warm Memorial Day Weekend, Fremont police are reminding the public to avoid the Niles Creek area due to its dangers.
Swimming or gathering in the Niles Creek is illegal and unsafe, according to the Fremont Police Department, which said officers will be on the lookout this weekend for anyone trespassing in the area.
"We understand the desire to cool off during hot weather," police said in a statement Friday. "But the Niles Creek has many hidden dangers, and people have lost their lives while swimming in this area."
Trespassing in the area is punishable by arrest, and violators will be cited, police said. Vehicles found parked illegally in the area will be cited and/or towed, they added.
Police recommended the public go to Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area or Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area to cool off this weekend.
