FREMONT, CA — A high school in Fremont is shutting down its football program, a decision that has stunned and angered many, according to a report by the Mercury News.
The Irvington High School football team was disbanded at the end of the academic year, prompted by dwindling roster numbers and a head coach's departure, according to the report.
The team went 7-4 in the season and made the playoffs.
"Friday night lights, football games, homecoming, all those things are the fabric of high school," Ginger Fallorina Macadaeg, a parent of an Irvington junior varsity player, told the Mercury News. "To do away with that like they did at Mission San Jose, it’s like, ‘Man, we can’t lose that. We just can’t.’"
Irvington High School becomes the second Fremont Unified school to drop its football program. Mission San Jose got rid of its program a decade ago, according to the report.
