Fremont Residents Will See A New Fee Added To Their Bills In July

FREMONT, CA — Fremont residents will see a slight increase to their garbage bill starting in July due to the implementation of the StopWaste Regulatory Fee.

Multifamily and commercial properties will now be charged for the weekly number of cubic yards of garbage service at $1.10 per cubic yard each month. Meanwhile, single-family homes will see 30 cents added to their garbage bill, city officials said.

The StopWaste Regulatory Fee will raise funds across Alameda County to divert back into environmental programs required by law to "keep compostable and recyclable materials out of landfills, reduce food waste, support edible food donation and recovery, and prevent plastic bag pollution."

City officials say the state currently provides limited funds to carry out this work. With the new fee, StopWaste, which runs these programs countywide, would be able to recover the costs of the required work.

The fee is designed to be small, proportional, and equitable," according to StopWaste. "For residential customers, it totals less than $4 a year, and for most commercial customers, about $2 a month."

The new fee will appear on a separate line of the bill and does not change local solid waste service rates, according to StopWaste.
