FREMONT, CA — Police are searching for multiple suspects who they say "beckoned" an elderly woman to come down from her apartment in Fremont before robbing her.
The woman was on her apartment balcony along Rector Common when two suspects motioned for her to meet them downstairs, the Fremont Police Department said.
Downstairs, they showed the elderly woman jewelry before ripping her necklace and bracelet off, police said.
The suspects then ran off into a waiting car driven by a third suspect, police said, leaving the woman behind with minor visible injuries.
It's unclear if this was a targeted robbery or part of a much larger crime ring involving jewelry scams.
Fremont police have previously warned of incidents involving jewelry scams, where a suspect distracts the victim, sometimes by showing them fake jewelry and placing it on them, before taking off the victim's real pieces.
Earlier this year, the San Francisco Police Department also warned community members of a ruse targeting seniors for their jewelry.
