FREMONT, CA — A Fremont woman is recovering from multiple injuries that left her hospitalized for a week following a violent altercation outside her home.
Elsei Arling suffered severe brain injuries, skull and rib fractures, and reduced memory and hearing after a neighbor threw her to the ground outside her home on Sept. 30, according to reports in KRON4 and ABC7 and a GoFundMe page.
According to ABC7, the altercation began at around 7:30 p.m., when Arling was at home and heard her neighbor fighting with someone outside. Her neighbor had called her previously to tell her she was scared of the man, who was renting a room near her house, according to KRON4.
Arling went outside to investigate, and said that the man began talking to her. Surveillance video shows that the man ripped the cell phone out of her hand.
Arling said she ran after him, but cannot remember what followed.
Surveillance video shows the man throwing her violently to the ground and smashing her phone against the pavement. No suspect has been named, and the Fremont Police Department said that the investigation remains ongoing, according to ABC7.
Arling woke up in intensive care with no memory of the event. She continues to suffer from 50% hearing loss in her right ear, and cannot remember basic details like the names of her pets, according to KRON4. She is also suffering from swelling of the brain.
She was released last Wednesday from the hospital after a week.
Her husband Dutch, who suffered from cancer and unemployment for two years, started a GoFundMe page to help with medical bills. Dutch said the family "exhausted every single resource we had, like retirement funds, insurance annuity."
"Just as we were beginning to rebuild, this terrible assault happened," he said.
