FREMONT, CA — An armed man who was killed while holding two women hostage inside an assisted living facility in Fremont over the summer was using a fake gun, police said in newly released bodycam footage of the incident.
Authorities on Thursday released the intense video revealing new details about the hostage standoff inside the dining room of the Carlton Senior Living in Fremont that left Newark resident Edward Oliver, 64, dead on the afternoon of July 24.
Police did not say why they believe Oliver held two women hostage at gunpoint.
Bodycam footage shows multiple officers rapidly moving into a chaotic scene at the facility around 3:40 p.m.
"He has a gun, and he has my mom and my sister," a woman can be heard telling responding officers on the footage.
Officers approach the dining room and realize that Oliver appeared to be armed with a gun and was pointing it at a woman inside, the video shows.
"We need to communicate," the officer yells at Oliver, a closed glass door separating them. "Can you put the gun down?"
"No," Oliver appears to mouth.
The officer continues to tell Oliver to put the gun down, warning him that he doesn't want to shoot him, but he will if he has to.
"He's got the gun pointed straight at her, dude," one officer tells another. "I'm going to (explicit) have to."
"Do it," the other officer responds.
"Put the gun down!" the officer screams once more before firing several shots at Oliver, who can be seen flinching.
People in the background scream after the gunfire, while officers rush into the dining room.
Within seconds, officers can be heard screaming and then firing a volley of gunfire at Oliver.
Police say Oliver was still pointing the weapon when they entered the room. Oliver died from his injuries at the hospital, authorities said.
None of the residents at the facility were physically harmed, police said. One of the officers suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, they added.
Oliver was carrying an airsoft gun designed to look like a real gun at the time officers shot him, police said.
The Department of Justice is currently investigating the case. It's unclear whether any of the officers involved, identified by the Fremont Police Department as Mohammad Barakat, Raymond Hensley, Ryan Higgins and Michael Holback, were suspended pending the investigation's outcome.
