Journey Home Tour of Sunrise Village Emergency Shelter: You’re Invited

When you picture a homeless shelter, you probably don’t think about a place with a family room and a play structure in the courtyard, or a garden in the back that supplies vegetables for dinner.

Likewise, when you picture a homeless person, your mind may not go to a young woman who takes a deep breath and tells you that she left her home because her husband threatened her and their children, or a 50-something professional who lost her job and found herself with no way to pay rent.

Abode Services’ tours of Sunrise Village, our emergency shelter in Fremont, are a great way to learn more about the realities of homelessness – who experiences it, what causes it, and what kinds of services are needed to end homelessness in our community.

Tours are an hour long, and include a walk-through of Sunrise Village (which houses single adults and families with children) and of the HOPE Project Mobile Health Clinic, along with a chance to hear a resident share the story of how they became homeless, and how they’re working to regain their stability and find a home, using the services available to them at the shelter.

Sunrise Village is funded in part by contributions from individual donors and supporters of Abode Services, and by the generosity of the RealNetworks Foundation, the Thomas J. Long Foundation, the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, the S.L. Gimbel Foundation Advised Fund at The Community Foundation Serving the Counties of Riverside and San Bernardino, and other foundation and corporate partners.
