Camp Held For Girls Who Want To Be Firefighters

The two-day camp included hands-on use of firefighting tools.

FREMONT, CA— A two-day camp was help in Fremont over the weekend for high school aged girls interested in becoming firefighters. The inaugural NorCal First Alarm Girls Fire Camp gave participants training with actual firefighting tools and equipment, as well as classroom instruction. All of the camp topics were designed to encourage those interested in a career in the fire service by giving them hands on experience.

The camp was held at the Fremont Fire Department Tactical Training Center in Fremont.

It was modeled after similar camps in Los Angeles and Seattle, both of which are long-standing, non-profit fire and leadership programs that have proven to be very effective at inspiring future female firefighters.

Among the hands-on training was an introduction to power tools, hose handling, how to use a fire extinguisher, how to put on and remove personal protective equipment (PPE), orientation to using a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), an introduction to wildland firefighting, and training in ladders including an opportunity to climb the aerial truck ladder.

Active duty and retired female firefighters from throughout Northern California and across the West Coast, from Alaska to Los Angeles, led the camp. Over 80 volunteers from fire departments and labor associations have contributed to the Camp with equipment, financial contributions and/or the staffing of personnel.
