Building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Fremont just got easier. The City is pleased to announce the first ADU plan that has been granted preapproval through the City's new Preapproved ADU Program. The plan is for a 702 square foot, 2-bedroom, 1-bath ADU from Adore Homes, Inc. To use this preapproved ADU plan, homeowners must contract with Adore Homes since they own the preapproved plan set. Using a preapproved plan cuts the permit review time in half and significantly reduces design review and plan check fees. However, all preapproved plans still require additional site-specific plans, studies, and engineering, as applicable.

Over the last two decades, the State has adopted a number of laws that encourage ADUs and limit the requirements that may be imposed by cities on such units. To learn more about Fremont's program and using a preapproved ADU plan, visit the City’s Preapproved ADU Program webpage. As more preapproved plans become available, they will be posted on the webpage.
