CRASS, SASS & CLASS – Joan Rivers – June 8, 1933 – September 4, 2014
As I heard the news of Joan River’s passing I sincerely felt bad. As a child of TV, I remembered her not as the chief of the fashion police, but as Joan the sarcastic comedic talent. Yes, she was crass; she said the things that no one had the nerve to say, and I guess we should we be thankful she said it for us anyway.
Moreover, her talent for crass was in the delivery, impeccable was her spontaneity and timing. Although many females try to copy, no one has been able to do the two arm pull up and reach high bar called Joan Rivers.
Maybe her cutting wit was reflected of her life pursuit to become a female comedian. It wasn’t funny, like getting kicked out of the house early, because she wanted to be an actress and not follow her father-doctor. But she had nerve, chutzpah and she’d pay dearly for her dream, it’s what she wanted for her life and she never gave up!
Joan Rivers also had sass; she had to take it and give it back to the worst and to the best of them. With her having to come face to face with her looks (plastic surgery), her race (Jewish) and gender; a woman in an all-male industry, she dealt with adversity head on. She met rejection and dejection and took it on the chin! For example, after she became the most popular fill in host for Johnny Carson, she was offered her own show, she accepted, and he never spoke to her again.
Her life ran the gamut from adversity, hardship, comedy, success to tragedy and back to comedy and success. Like when her husband committed suicide and left her and her daughter Melissa Rivers alone and broke. She had to keep going with the only thing she knew how to do which was to be a comedian. Although, she was a funny woman, her life was not the and only thing that she worked equally as hard on, was her relationship with her daughter Melissa whom she loved with all her heart! She turned it around for both of them, and when she looks back from heaven she knows she did right for her daughter and for the life she lived.
The more you find out about Joan Rivers, the more you empathize and sympathize with her. You can’t be jealous of Joan for she worked so hard and really earned it. But Joan also had class, reflective in her fashion and style; she surrounded herself with beauty and opulence, as noted by her New York Apartment. But she was always grateful and thanked God every night before going on stage with her show and before her surgery, she professed she was grateful and at peace for she had a wonderful life.
At the end of her very long journey, she paved the way for multiple generations of comedic women. Joan had more than confidence for she survived, worked hard and thrived. Yes, Joan Rivers was crass, we grew to love her for it, and she had sass without it she couldn’t have endured. But she also had class, reflective in her fashion style, and home décor. Moreover, she was a class unto herself, she is an original and irreplaceable may she be endeared for her life of crass, sass and class!
