Dumbarton Bridge Reopens

A major accident caused a huge traffic backup for 5 hours.

FREMONT, CA — Finally! The Dumbarton Bridge reopened to all traffic at 6:42 p.m. Wednesday, nearly 5 hours after a crash between a bus and truck set up a nightmarish evening commute.

Initially, all traffic in both directions was blocked, according to the Fremont Police Department. The CHP managed to get all westbound and one eastbound lane open for the majority of the commute, but traffic came to a standstill on much of the Peninsula as people unaware of the crash tried in vain to get onto the Dumbarton Bridge, while other commuters headed north to the San Mateo Bridge or south to Highway 237, which is still at a crawl approaching 7 p.m..

At least two people were transported to the hospital for injuries.
