Fremont City Council Appoints New Vice Mayor

FREMONT, CA — Raymond Liu, the youngest person ever to be elected to Fremont's City Council, has been appointed as the new vice mayor.

Liu takes over for councilmember Yajing Zhang, who served in the position for the last eight months. Liu will serve in the position through March 2027.

Liu was appointed during the city council meeting on Tuesday, July 21. He was next in line for the position after receiving the third most votes during the 2024 general municipal election, according to Fremont city officials.

A product of Fremont's District 6, which he now represents, Liu attended Horner Jr. High, Irvington High School and Ohlone College, according to his city official biography.

He earned three degrees from Ohlone College before transferring to UC Davis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science, according to his biography.

Given his background as a software engineer, Liu has worked at various Bay Area technology companies, according to his biography.

"Deeply connected to the Irvington area, Councilmember Liu’s upbringing in Fremont has shaped his commitment to public service and advocacy for his community," Liu's profile states. "One of the reasons he decided to run for office was to ensure that all residents of Fremont could have the same opportunities and successes that he has been fortunate enough to experience."

Liu has been a Fremont councilmember since 2024. He ran for the California State Senate earlier this year but lost in the June primaries.

His Fremont council term, meanwhile, expires in November 2028.
