Fremont, Mayor Condemn Synagogue Violence

The City plans to proclaim November 11-18, 2018, as United Against Hate Week.

Last Saturday Robert Bowers, armed with an AR-15 and three handguns, walked into a synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA and massacred 11 people. Two brothers died. So did a husband and wife. A woman who was 97 years old was not spared. Another six people were injured including four police officers.

People across the world have condemned the attack. Here in Fremont, the City released this statement, "As a matter of official public policy, the City of Fremont has zero tolerance of prejudice, racism, bigotry, hatred, and violence. Our City stands in unity together and offers our condolences for the families of the victims of the shooting at The Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The City is flying its U.S. flags at half-staff in honor of the victims of this act of violence as directed by the presidential proclamation. In addition, at the November 13 City Council meeting, the Fremont City Council will be joining other Bay Area cities, in proclaiming November 11-18, 2018, as United Against Hate Week, and supporting the efforts of Compassionate Fremont and the Human Relations Commission in working to create an inclusive city, welcoming of diversity. The proclamation further states that Fremont will continue to stand firmly with other cities who believe in fairness, justice, and equal treatment of all and will work with our community to eliminate hatred and intolerance."

Fremont Mayor Lily Mei added, "Fremont must continue its long tradition of tolerance and respect for people of all religious and cultural backgrounds, so that all Fremont community members feel accepted and safe in our community."
