Fremont Mayor And Other Climate Mayors Set Goals For Coronavirus Recovery

Recognizing the need to work together at every level of government to move beyond this pandemic, Fremont Mayor Lily Mei and 197 other Climate Mayors recently issued a joint letter strongly urging federal legislators to take bold action to protect the planet and build a more just economy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the goal of rebuilding the economy and country stronger than ever before, Climate Mayors are advocating for a national transition to a zero-carbon economy to create green jobs, provide cleaner air, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve public health, support resilience, and lift up our most vulnerable residents. The three driving principles of this work are: 1) Building for a Better Future, 2) Leading with Equity, and 3) Prioritizing Multiple Benefits.

As the City kicks off Fremont’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) update, the goals set forth by Climate Mayors are more important than ever for Fremont.

“In 2017, I joined the national Climate Mayors network to express Fremont’s commitment to adopting, honoring, and upholding the Paris Climate Agreement goals,” said Mayor Lily Mei. “Now, we are working to refresh our Climate Action Plan in alignment with Climate Mayors’ vision of a green and equitable post-COVID recovery by developing measures that will result in a healthy, safe, inclusive, and innovative future for Fremont. Please join us in sharing your thoughts and ideas on how we can reenergize our climate action efforts to make Fremont a more welcoming place to live, work, and play now and for generations to come.”

The City is hosting a virtual Climate Action Planning workshop on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at 6:00 pm via Zoom. The workshop will allow participants to learn more about the CAP update, ask questions, and provide input. Register for this event.
