Fremont Mechanic Who Gunned Down Customer Learns Fate: Report

FREMONT, CA — A Fremont mechanic who fired a volley of bullets at a customer, killing him, has been sentenced to nine years in state prison, according to an East Bay Times report.

Sylvester Carver, 27, avoided going to trial for murder and attempted murder charges by agreeing to a deal that saw him plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter, according to the report.

As part of the deal, he will serve less than a decade in state prison for the fatal shooting of Alli Safi, 32, in Fremont on March 5, 2024, according to the report.

"You made choice after choice that ended my husband’s life and destroyed my children’s future," Safi’s wife, Clarissa Safi, said at the sentencing hearing in May.

Carver and Safi were in a heated confrontation at the now-defunct ASCO Auto Body shop on Allbrae Street moments before the shooting, according to the report.

Safi drove off from the shop with a close family friend, and Carver followed before firing more than a dozen bullets into Safi's car at the intersection of Stevenson Boulevard and Albrae Street, killing him, according to the report and a police press release.

Fremont police say they found Safi in the driver's seat with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel took him to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries four days later, police said.

Carver drove off from the scene, but was quickly identified as a suspect, police said.

Police tracked Carver down to Richmond on March 13, 2024, and arrested him on suspicion of murder.
