Fremont Police Detective Dies In Livermore

Livermore police are investigating the death of a Fremont Police Detective and Livermore resident Matthew Kerner.

FREMONT, CA — Livermore police are investigating the death of a Fremont police detective and Livermore resident.

On Monday, Jan. 30, Livermore police were called to the Livermore home of Fremont Police Detective Matthew Kerner at around 2 a.m. and found him unresponsive, Fremont police said Friday afternoon. First responders performed life-saving measures on Kerner and transported him to a local hospital. Kerner passed away shortly after.

Livermore police have turned the case over to the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau. The exact cause of death is unknown as of Friday, though initial investigations do not indicate trauma or injury, police said.

Fremont police say they have also contacted the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and a third-party investigation service.

“We send our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family. Our department is devastated by the tragic loss of Detective Kerner. We are heartbroken and experiencing a great deal of sadness as a result of losing our colleague,” Fremont Police Chief Sean Washington said in a statement.
