Fremont Police Use Drone, CHP Helicopter To Catch Burglary Suspect

A resident was alerted to the burglary by his cell phone while out for a bike ride with his kids. He called police.

FREMONT, CA — A Fremont resident witnessed his home being burglarized Monday morning through a live video feed on his cellphone and called police, resulting in the suspect's arrest, police said Tuesday.

At 9:51 a.m., officers responded to a report of a burglary happening at a home in the 34000 block of Eucalyptus Terrace. The caller said he was out on a bike ride with his children when he was alerted by an alarm, which was connected to a live video feed on his cellphone.

Through the video, the resident could see a male suspect trying to enter the home through a back door, according to police.

Once at the scene, an officer witnessed the suspect exiting the back of the house and fleeing to the front.

Officers established a perimeter in the area to search for the suspect and also used the help of a CHP helicopter and Fremont Fire Department drone, police said.

Less than two hours later, officers found the suspect hiding in the backyard of a home in the 34200 block of Tulepo Street.

The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Demetrius Wells of Newark. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary, according to police. After Wells was arrested, officers were able to recover items taken from the home and they were returned to the resident, police said.
