FREMONT, CA— Fremont's Police Department is the latest Bay Area agency to report an increase in jewelry thefts involving roadside scammers approaching victims during walks. The Peninsula has also been a hot-spot for this crime.

These scammers often use tactics like asking for directions or claiming it's a special occasion, then ask for a hug to covertly remove valuable jewelry, swapping it with fake pieces.
