Fremont School Named State Finalist in Samsung STEAM Contest

FREMONT, CA — Irvington High School in Fremont has been chosen as one of five finalists in California in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. The winner will receive $25,000 in technology for their school and will advance to the national contest against other state winners. Three national winners will receive a $150,000 technology grant as well as a $20,000 donation to the non-profit organization of their choice.

The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest is a competition that encourages students to solve issues in their community using science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

The five California finalists and their projects:

• Irvington High School, Fremont – Designing a cost-efficient unmanned aerial vehicle prototype to lead students and teachers through evacuation protocols during an earthquake
• Laguna Creek High School, Elk Grove – Designing and constructing bicycle RVs to donate to homeless veterans
• Wilson Junior High School, El Centro – Designing a solar generation station to provide air conditioning for low-income families
• Centennial High School, Corona – Developing a water monitoring system to reduce waste and increase water conservation efforts
• John Muir Middle School, San Jose – Developing a two-way translation system to improve communication between English-language learners and their teachers.

The state winner will be announced in December.
