Fremont Teachers, District Reach Tentative Contract

FREMONT, CA — The Fremont Unified School District and the union that represents its teachers have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract, the two sides announced.

The agreement calls for guaranteed salary increases for the current school year and the following year followed by negotiations over salaries and other items for the third year, the two sides said in a joint statement.

Further details will be announced later, the two sides said.

The tentative agreement must be approved by teachers' union members and the district's school board.

On March 29 teachers, parents and students held rallies and "walk-ins" to protest stalled contract talks.

The Fremont Unified District Teachers Association said in a statement at that time that the purpose of the actions was to "fight for a fair contract that attracts and retains the best educators for students."

Victoria Birbeck-Herrera, the president of the union, which has 2,000 members, said in that statement, "Our goal is to attract and keep quality educators for our students. Teachers need a living wage."

The tentative agreement was reached last Thursday after the two sides participated in a fact-finding hearing with a neutral arbitrator.
