Fremont And Union City Mayors Announce A Battle Of The Cities Census Challenge

Today, Fremont Mayor Lily Mei joined into a friendly challenge with Union City Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci to see who can encourage their residents to achieve a higher Census 2020 self-response rate.

The two Tri-City area cities are currently close when it comes to their respective 2020 Census response rates, with Union City’s rate of 80.4% slightly exceeding Fremont’s rate of 78.8%, as of September 15. With the September 30, 2020, deadline quickly approaching, both cities’ goal is to attain a self-response rate of 100%.
For both cities, a high response rate to the Census is essential to securing a sufficient allocation of federal funding for the next 10 years to support critical services such as education, infrastructure repair, health care, and several service programs. The Census also determines Congressional representation.

Census outreach is especially important for cities, such as Fremont and Union City that host highly diverse populations and risk being undercounted. As of now, residents can continue to fill out the Census until September 30, 2020, using all three methods: online, mail, and phone. The Census typically takes less than 10 minutes to complete and does not ask any questions regarding citizenship and financial information.
