Hawks' Swimmers Shave Time, Coach's Beard In Hawk Invite

Las Positas men and women broke meet and team marks in annual event at LPC Aquatics Complex

The Hawk Invite always brings out the best in Las Positas College swimmers, and this year’s big meet was no exception.

“We had some great swims, including some meet and team records broken,” Las Positas coach Jason Craighead stated of the March 29-30 event at the college’s pristine Aquatics Complex.

There was even a fun side to the competition.

“During our team meeting prior to the meet, I made a deal with the team,” the good-natured Craighead shared. “Anyone that wins an event can shave off part of my beard (it needed to go anyway). My assistant coach also volunteered the hair on my head. Sure enough, our women win the first event, and our men won the second event and set a team record! Long story short, I look pretty funny.”

The Hawks were also shaving off healthy chunks of time in the water.

“All in all, we had season bests in almost every race, and every swimmer had at least two best times,” Craighead said.

The Las Positas men’s 200-medley relay of Drake Southern, Nico Cory, Matt Kuan and Esteban Perez Del Rio set a meet record in a time of 1 minute, 35.64 seconds. Del Rio also set meet marks in the 50 freestyle (21.26) and 100 freestyle (45.76).

On the women’s side, Hannah Tsui had a terrific meet. She broke team and Hawk Invite records in the 50 breaststroke (31.10). Tsui also eclipsed the oldest Hawks’ record in the books in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.04) – a mark set by Jillian Chapman (1:09.97, 2011), in the first year of the program.

Tsui also broke the team record in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.42), formerly held by Shannon Daviscourt (2:37.17, 2018).
