Hydrating Heroes is group of enthusiastic middle schoolers who will find the most accessible and cost effective ways to save water

Water is an extremely limited resource. In countries with water shortages, they do everything they can to save water. In California, we take water for granted and can do a better job on conserving it. The latest water conservation study done by Stanford University showed that about 237 billion gallons are wasted per year.
We are a group of enthusiastic middle schoolers who are interested in finding the most accessible, easiest and cost effective solution to conserve water and help you save money. We would also like to increase community awareness on water conservation and promote any water conservation incentives that are being offered by local utility companies to public.
Our first promotion is on Rainwater Harvesting. It was legalized in California in 2013, so not many California residents are fully aware of this method. Compare to other states, it was only legalized recently in 2013 because the California state government was cautious about people drinking rainwater without proper filtering, causing potential health issues.
Here’s how it works - rainwater drops on the roof, flows into the gutter pipes on the side of
the house and leads the water into the tank. The tank should be an opaque color to prevent algae growth by controlling the pH of the water. Garden pipes can be connected to the tank to provide irrigation to the garden. Illustration is shown below.

This solution is very cost effective as you can buy over the counter tool kit for a couple of hundreds of dollars or can be built DIY from parts sold in local hardware stores. However it can save at least 30-40% of your water bill (depending on the season) and the material cost can be fully paid back during first year of installation.
Additionally ACWD is offering great rebates of up to $50 for the purchase and installation of qualifying rain barrels for a limited time only. Rebate is $50 per rain barrel with a two (2) rebate maximum per residential account. You can visit ACWD official website to learn more. Please do not miss out this opportunity!
