Las Positas star Michael Hayes STLB NorCal Freshman of Year

The West High-Tracy graduate led Hawks to runner-up finish in powerful Coast-North

The awards continue to roll in for Las Positas College freshman Michael Hayes.

The West High-Tracy graduate has been named the Signal The Light Basketball (STLB) Northern California Freshman of the Year.

Hayes had a stellar season in leading the Hawks to a runner-up finish in the powerful Coast-North and a playoff berth. He was No. 3 in the state in scoring at 23.7 points a game and just outside the top 10 in rebounding at 9.7 per game. He led the Coast-North in both categories, and was No. 2 in the conference in field-goal percentage (59.5), ranking behind teammate Alafia Oluwosogo (63.2).

Hayes also made the Northern California All-State Team along with Los Medanos sophomore guard Raazhel Watkins (College Park HS).

But even with all the plaudits, the left-handed Hayes is fine-tuning his game to prepare for the higher level of play that awaits him after the 2019-20 season with the Hawks.
