Local Boys Scout Troop celebrates 60th Anniversary of Fremont with Planting 60+ Native Plants

Celebrating 60th Anniversary of Fremont with a Conservation related Service Project

On April 17th 2016, a group of Boy Scouts from BSA Troop 125 of Fremont led by local Life Scout Ankur Samanta conducted a service project to help restore a section of land (the Acacia Grove) at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Once swamped by the invasive Blackwood Acacia, a previous service project was conducted at the Acacia Grove by these scouts in December of 2015 to clear the region of the invasive species to allow native plants to regrow. In celebration of Fremont’s 60th anniversary, the group came back to complete the habitat restoration by planting 60+ plant species native to California, including the Toyon, California Coffee Berry, etc., that were donated by the Refuge Nursery.

In a statement from Refuge Nursery volunteer coordinator Mrs. June Smith, “The Native Plant Nursery is a volunteer run so we depend on dedicated volunteers like Ankur and his group who are willing to do what is needed. Ankur’s group not only helped in the first stage of clearing out invasive plants, but returned to finish the second stage of replanting with native plants.”
