Local Fremont Student Starting College in High School

Local high school students are choosing to earn college credit this summer at UC Santa Cruz.

A local student from Fremont High School has enrolled to take courses this summer at UC Santa Cruz at 50% off regular summer tuition rates. As part of UCSC’s Summer Session, high school students can choose from over 100 different classes across thirty departments including Biology, Environmental Studies, Music, and many more.

Students earn UC transferable credits at a fraction of the cost. The UCSC Summer Session tuition discount is exclusive to high school students, who can enroll in any lower-division courses (those numbered 1 through 99). Popular classes for high school students include Introduction to Computer Science (CMPS 10), Calculus (Math 19A/19B), History (10A), Economics (Econ 1, Econ 2), and Literature (Lit 61).

Last year, 82% of high school students taking courses earned a B- or above and the average GPA of all high school students was 3.34. Students can live on-campus in a residence hall or commute to campus. High School students take classes alongside current UCSC students and get a real feel for what college will be like.
