On the weekend of July 30th to August 1st, 2016, a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 125 led by Eagle Scout candidate Ankur Samanta, built a Mobile Native Redwood Biome for Ardenwood Elementary School. The project was conducted in alignment with the Ardenwood Garden Club’s objective to increase awareness within the community about native flora and fauna, and habitat restoration. Another goal of the project was to promote non-invasive earthworm species such as the Red Wriggler within the community, by introducing the species to the biome in place of the readily available but invasive Canadian Nightcrawler.

School teacher and Garden Club advisors Mr. Loisel and Mr. Christensen said, “The redwood planters have contributed to our school community by improving the local habitat for the redwood forest biome with native ferns. We appreciate the fine craftsmanship of your planters and they enable us to teach outdoor lessons about plant ecosystems and effect of non-invasive earthworm species across grade levels.” In another statement, they said “We think that these new biome including the flora & fauna are beneficial for both teaching and learning. Our students have already started to care for these young plants by watering them. We are fortunate that you have helped to make our school more beautiful while providing new real-life opportunities for our students to learn about current science standards.”

In addition to the biome, a website was created as part of the initiative to educate students about various biomes and their characteristics.

All lumber required to build the planters were donated by the C and J fencing company, and other supplies were sponsored by the Ardenwood PTA and Garden Club.
