Police Offer Package Theft Safety Tips

Cyber Monday means packages will be piling up on porches. Here are some tips to avoid becoming a crime victim.

BAY AREA — Cyber Monday is a huge holiday shopping day as people take advantage of deep discounts designed to lure shoppers into sites.

To make sure that you are not a victim of porch pirates, the Fremont Police Department has released a list of strategies to avoid mail and package theft. These tips are useful regardless of your address.

  • Promptly retrieve your mail. Pick up mail from your mailbox as soon as possible after delivery, especially if you are expecting to receive a check or merchandise.
  • Plan to be home when your packages are scheduled to arrive, or have someone else pick them up for you.
  • Request a signature delivery option if available, or request the shipment be held at the shipping facility.
  • If your item was delivered and you did not receive it, report the theft or loss to the original company, the shipping company, and the Fremont Police Department. If you have home surveillance video of a package theft, call FPD at 790-6800, option 3.
