A Really Great Experience

YIBI Youth Business Leadership Camp (YBLT) Mentor Max Chou recalls his experience of teaching youth business, leadership, and marketing

My YIBI Experience

I am Max Chou, a junior at Mission San Jose High School. This past year I’ve been working with multiple groups including ShoeGuard, Findr, Foodiez, Parkway, and Lend ‘N Rent. They have been generally successful in the recent YIBI International Business competition.

My experience at YIBI being a TA can be summed up with three words: enlightening, enjoyable, and tiring. Being at TA puts me at a position to help the students there improve on their own projects but often this comes around and opens my eyes as well to things I can improve on my own project from before. Some critique I provide to them can also be applied to my project and this is part of the reason why I find being a TA is so enlightening. The different students that go to this camp make being a TA enjoyable. Most of the time the students are goofy and reluctant to learn but once they get into the project, I find myself seeing them grow in the same way I did when I was a student. Finally, as much fun as it is being a TA there are moments when it is tiring to have to keep the students in check. Despite the amount of fun to be had there will always be conflicts when interests differ. But part of what is so great about being a TA is learning new ways to resolve them and help the students grow in their path to becoming successful entrepreneurs.
