Deep-Sea Mystery: Stolen Submarine Found Afloat, No One Aboard
The unique vessel, initially reported as a downed aircraft, was reported missing from Berkeley, officials said.
BERKELEY, CA – Did someone swipe this yellow submarine to live beneath the waves in a sea of green? (Ringo, you there?)
Initially thought to be a downed aircraft floating in waters off Emeryville, the unoccupied, yellow (and red, white and blue) sub was recovered Sunday afternoon by police and fire crews.
The unusual vessel, reportedly stolen out of Berkeley, was hauled from the water and towed to a nearby marina around 12:30 p.m. by officers and the Alameda County Fire Department, according to the Emeryville Police Department.

"The unoccupied 'boat'/homemade sub ... was initially reported as a downed aircraft and visible from the rear of Alameda County Fire Department Station 34," the fire agency said.
The sub was tagged and up to date on registration, but the owner initially was unavailable, officials said. CBS SF Bay Area reported the owner, a marine scientist, was reunited with her vessel.
