Salmonella Recall: Frozen Shrimp Sold At Fremont Costco

Kirkland and other brand-name frozen shrimp distributed here and nationwide recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

FREMONT, CA — Check your freezers: Kirkland brand frozen shrimp sold by Costco is among the brands recalled by Kader Exports for possible salmonella contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The frozen cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp sold in 1-, 1.5- and 2-pound bags was distributed nationwide, including to the East Bay.

Besides Kirkland, the brands included in the recall are Aqua Star Reserve, Censea, Fresh Market, Tops, Unistar and Wellsley Farms. Neither India-based Kader Exports nor the FDA disclosed how much shrimp was involved in the recall. The affected products were distributed to retail stores from February to mid-May 2020.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled products, but FDA experts tested it and found it to contain salmonella, the agency said.

The company agreed to destroy the cooked shrimp that had not been distributed. The FDA said cross-contamination was likely the root cause of the potential contamination and that the company has taken preventative measures to stop future contamination from occurring.

A full list of the recalled shrimp is found on the FDA website. Consumers who bought the products should take them back to the retailer for a full refund.

Young children, frail and elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems are especially susceptible to salmonella bacteria infections. Salmonella infections can cause serious illness or even death among those most susceptible.

Among healthy people with infections, symptoms often include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In some rare circumstances, the organism causing salmonella infection may get into the bloodstream and cause more arterial infections (aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
