Suspect Arrested In Violent Fremont Chain Snatch

The suspect is accused of multiple felonies, in addition to this Fremont attack.

FREMONT, CA — A man accused of throwing a woman to the ground during a chain snatch robbery in Fremont has been charged in the case. 22-year-old Jermaine Smith was already in custody, having been arrested by Oakland Police on unrelated charges just days after the Fremont attack.

The Fremont robbery happened on May 6, at 4:35 p.m. The attack happened at a gas station in the 39000 block of Fremont Boulevard, and police were able to get surveillance photos of the suspect, the attack and a related vehicle.

The victim was injured when she was thrown to the ground. The robber got away with a gold necklace.

Detectives received the surveillance video on May 9. They determined that the suspect was Smith. They also learned that Smith had been arrested on May 11 by Oakland Police for felony evading and was in custody.

"This was a terrific joint effort by members from several specialty units working together within the Fremont Police Department to identify the suspect responsible for this incident," said Fremont Police Lieutenant Michael Tegner. "This arrest is good progress in the recent incidents our community has experienced and our detectives remain committed to investigating these crimes."
