Where to Spend Time in Fremont
Check out four Fremont locations where you have to hang out at some point in your life!
Since my birthday’s coming up, I thought it’d be a good idea to commemorate my years (*ahem* whole life) in Fremont by mentioning some of the noteworthy places that’ll surely give me nostalgia one day. Living in Fremont for almost 16 years now, I’ve explored a lot of the city and definitely have some idea about the best and most amusing places to visit. Here are four top destinations that are absolute must-see’s for the typical Bay Arean!
Alameda Creek
Alameda Creek is a suburban paradise. Nestled between Fremont and Union City, this trail (as do all paths) has two directions. One goes towards the city and ultimately Mission Peak Regional Preserve, but I haven’t been that way too often. The more scenic route is towarsd the bay–the trail goes underneath overpasses and through majestic fields on its way to Coyote Hills Regional Park. (But getting there is most of the fun.) I’m lucky enough to have an entrance to the trail from my neighborhood, but there’s tons of places to enter from if you live nearby. It takes less than an hour to bike to Coyote Hills and back, but I’ve never been past the edge of the salt flats. My first venture there was with my best friend in 8th grade, and we were simply awestruck at the natural beauty of Coyote Hills and San Francisco Bay. When the wind picks up and the sun comes out, it’s truly a transformational experience. Pro tip: go during sunset…you won’t be disappointed!
Centerville Library
This usually empty and closed little library right next to the Brookvale shopping complex is a beauty often overlooked! The small platform outside the library is a shady and calm place to hang out–perfect for late afternoon Starbucks and catching up with your friends. (Plus it's basically right next door to American!) Many of my afternoons have been spent right in front of the library–sadly, due to lack of funds, its hours have been cut to almost nothing. Facing the library is a children’s park where you can relive your youth, and there’s a large spacious lot (I can’t find a purpose for it) right next to the library. If you can find a wild shopping cart from the supermarket, bonus points to you: cart racing is a perfect way to fill your free time! ;)

Cloverleaf Family Bowl
This establishment is quite possibly one of the most diverting places in all of Fremont, and definitely holds true to being fun for the whole family. At no other location will you find such a age-diverse population–except maybe the movie theater. I’ve been here more times than I can count, and this is where I learned how to bowl! With an incredibly high number of bowling lanes, an perfectly satiating snack bar, and an arcade that’s just the right bit overpriced, Cloverleaf is a staple for any visit to Fremont. The place holds an astonishing amount of culture, too: built in 1963, the bowling alley features local winner memorabilia alongside the lanes. Who knew Fremontians were such avid bowlers!?
Niles
I know, I know–Niles isn’t exactly a concrete location, but I can’t choose just one place! The entire historical significance of the area and the cutesy nostalgic vibe you get while crossing the streets is enough to merit an entire heading for one district. My go-to spots are The Nile Cafe and Niles Essaney Silent Film Museum (obviously!), but the whole area has so much to offer. From visiting the antique shops to exploring the hills to just grabbing some tea before heading out, Niles is a world within a world, and it’s definitely one of my favorite places in Fremont–if not my favorite district! Fun fact: one time while driving through, I saw a little kid–not more than maybe six or seven–dressed as Charlie Chaplin: bowler hat, makeup, cane and all! He was just casually walking down the street, basically explaining the essence of Niles.

Happy early birthday to me, and a big thank you to the city of Fremont for ostensibly raising me!
