1. Alanis bills on household hazardous waste, first responder education and county correctional officers clear the Senate (turlockjournal.com) — State lawmakers have advanced a bill that would finally let Fresno County designate its correctional deputy sheriffs as peace officers, potentially changing benefits and recognition for local jail staff. The measure, inspired by fallen Fresno County Correctional Officer Toamalama Scanlan, has cleared the Legislature with unanimous votes and now awaits Governor Gavin Newsom's decision, alongside two other statewide public safety and education bills.
2. Fresno Unified adds temporary drivers to shuttle students after CA law update (fresnobee.com) — Fresno Unified is temporarily reassigning school staff with clean driving records to shuttle students so field trips, sports, and after-school programs aren't canceled under new state transportation rules. Senate Bill 88 now requires stricter qualifications for employees who drive small vehicles more than 40 hours a year, so the district is carefully tracking hours while working to fully certify more drivers. Parents are assured only district employees will drive and won't exceed the legal threshold.
3. Heat advisory for Central California from Monday to Wednesday (fresnobee.com) — A heat advisory is in effect from early Monday through Wednesday night for the Fresno area, including Fresno-Clovis and the west side of Fresno County, with highs up to 104 degrees. The National Weather Service warns that the heat could cause illness and urges frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, plus quick action if anyone shows symptoms. Plan outdoor work and activities carefully during the hottest hours.
4. Latest eligibility rulings affect several prep football transfers in Fresno area (fresnobee.com) — If you follow Fresno-area high school football, several key transfer rulings could reshape local rosters just weeks before kickoff. Central Section officials have imposed sit-out periods, denials, and ongoing reviews for players moving among schools like Clovis West, Edison, San Joaquin Memorial, and others, with some appeals still pending and a Fresno State commit weighing his next move.
5. Man arrested for DUI after rollover crash on Highway 99 in Fresno County (abc30.com) — A rollover crash on northbound Highway 99 near the Bethel Avenue exit in Fresno County sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries Sunday afternoon. CHP says a man driving a white Mitsubishi recklessly rear-ended a Honda Pilot, causing it to overturn, and he was arrested at the scene on suspicion of DUI. Drivers in the area may notice lingering impacts as the investigation continues.
