📰 News we're reading

1. Field trips, sixth grade camps among Fresno Unified budget cuts (edsource.org) — Families in Fresno Unified are learning that district budget cuts have eliminated centrally funded field trips for TK–5 students and sixth grade camps, returning those experiences to site-level fundraising. Officials say one-time federal relief money had temporarily covered the $2.2 million annual cost, but parents now worry low-income students will miss out on key enrichment opportunities.

2. Nearly everything destroyed after scooter's battery causes Fresno home to catch fire (yourcentralvalley.com) — A central Fresno family of eight lost nearly everything when an electric scooter's lithium-ion battery reportedly ignited a fire in their North Palm Avenue home, though everyone escaped unharmed. Fresno Fire officials are urging residents to watch for overheating, swelling, or smoking batteries and to stop using any scooter or device that shows these warning signs.

3. Solar panels laid directly on the earth, with no steel and no racking, are already powering a California city's water system for less (energiesmedia.com) — Fresno's Northeast Surface Water Treatment Plant is now powered by a first-of-its-kind solar system that lays panels directly on the ground, cutting steel costs and lowering the city's electricity rate. Developer ForeFront Power and Erthos say the three-site Fresno portfolio could save ratepayers over $122 million through 2045 while already outperforming energy production forecasts.

4. Woman arrested, children injured in alleged central Fresno DUI crash, police say (abc30.com) — A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Fresno after police say a suspected DUI chase from the Tower District ended in a crash on the Highway 180 Abby Street off-ramp, injuring two young children in her vehicle. Officers, aided by air support, linked her to earlier reckless driving and collisions, and the investigation into the central Fresno incident is still ongoing.

5. Fresno Chaffee Zoo's African Lion Cubs Officially Have Names! (kmjnow.com) — Fresno Chaffee Zoo has officially named its July 4-born African lion cubs Jubilee and Indy, honoring their Independence Day birthday. The cubs are still bonding with mom behind the scenes, but locals can see their older siblings in African Adventure and follow updates or virtually adopt the new arrivals through the zoo's website and social media.
