1. Fresno Unified housing effort shows big gains for struggling students (fresnoland.org) — Fresno Unified's Crossroads Village housing program next to Fort Miller Middle School is already boosting attendance and behavior for many of the 64 students in 20 housed families. District and union leaders say the stable housing and on-site services come as FUSD faces enrollment declines, funding pressures, and potential school cuts that could affect Fresno neighborhoods.
2. Blast mine on San Joaquin River outside Fresno temporarily paused, but appeal is likely (kvpr.org) — A proposed hard-rock blast mine just north of Fresno, along the San Joaquin River near Lost Lake Park, has been temporarily halted after a deadlocked Fresno County Planning Commission vote. With permits for existing gravel operations expiring next year, residents, tribal leaders, and environmental advocates packed a marathon hearing to raise concerns about habitat, air quality, traffic, and wells, while the company is expected to appeal to the Board of Supervisors.

Owners say they hope to honor the legacy of longtime venue Tokyo Garden while reopening nearby, as the long-delayed rail project continues reshaping central Fresno's business landscape.
4. WATCH: Cigarette sparks house fire in Fresno, officials say (yourcentralvalley.com) — An early-morning house fire on West Terrace Avenue in Fresno destroyed a one-story home and displaced one resident, though they escaped safely. Fresno firefighters battled flames that spread to a palm tree and yard, plus a downed powerline, before determining an improperly discarded cigarette started the blaze.
