Today's riddle: What do you call somebody who crosses the ocean twice and doesn't take a bath? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Remember Lauck's Bakery? It's spirit and bierocks live just outside the Big Fresno Fair (fresnobee.com) — If you're hunting for Lauck's-style bierocks during the Big Fresno Fair, you'll need to head just outside the gates to Panaderia Torres on Kings Canyon, where former Lauck's baker Hector Garcia is serving them up. After a scam email cost him his fair booth, Garcia is selling his original and jalapeño-cheddar bierocks from the bakery all month, keeping a beloved Fresno tradition alive.
2. Protest in northeast Fresno follows shooting involving off-duty ICE agent (abc30.com) — Northeast Fresno residents gathered along Blackstone at River Park Saturday to protest immigration enforcement after a 72-year-old man shot an off-duty ICE agent found asleep on a lawn near Dudley and Broadway. Demonstrators and Councilmember Mike Karbassi are questioning increased ICE activity in Fresno, while police continue investigating why the Texas-based agent was in the neighborhood and have released no new details on his condition or custody status.
3. Fresno bootmaker reflects on decades of craftsmanship: 'It's so beautiful' (yourcentralvalley.com) — A longtime Fresno bootmaker, Luis Jovel, has quietly built a national reputation from right here in town, crafting custom boots for celebrities and even helping decorate the White House Christmas tree. After leaving war-torn El Salvador and working in Los Angeles, he settled in Fresno because the valley reminded him of home, and now hopes his story inspires others while he dreams of one day reaching the Smithsonian.
4. PG&E power shutoffs spare local counties, limited so far in Northern California. More could be coming (pressdemocrat.com) — Fresno County is among the areas where only small pockets of PG&E customers have lost power so far, but more intentional shutoffs remain possible through Monday as dry, windy fire weather continues. Residents are urged to watch for PG&E alerts and check their addresses online to see if their neighborhood is being monitored for potential outages.
5. Dylan Riley's big night lifts No. 23 Boise State over Fresno State (statenews.net) — Fresno State fans saw a tough home loss Saturday night as Boise State's Dylan Riley racked up 214 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-31 win in Fresno. Despite late scoring drives and strong play from quarterback Jaydan Mandal, the Bulldogs' four-game winning streak ended as Boise controlled the clock and sealed the game with a late field goal and onside-kick recovery.
