Accidental Shooting Reported Today At Gilroy Cop's House

The teen victim appears to have shot herself in the leg and is in the hospital, police said.

A possible accidental shooting was reported today at the home of a Gilroy Police Department officer.

Gilroy police and fire units responded at 3 p.m. to a residence on the 500 block of El Cerrito Way for a report of a teenage female suffering from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

The girl was taken by ambulance to a local trauma center and is listed in stable condition, police said. The injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Gilroy investigators said it appears that the victim gained access to a firearm belonging to the officer and accidentally shot herself in the leg, police said.

The report by the Gilroy Police Department’s Investigation Unit will be forwarded for review to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office.

Gilroy police did not identify the victim, the officer or their relationship, but stated that no other individuals were involved.
