Card Skimming Device Discovered At Gilroy Gas Station: Police

BREAKING: Police investigated the gas station after being "inundated" over the weekend with calls about credit-card fraud cases.

GILROY, CA — Gilroy police said Monday that a card-skimming device was discovered at and has been removed from a local gas station. The device was removed at 10 a.m. Monday from pump no. 2 at Valero gas station, 1190 First (1st) St. in Gilroy, police said Monday afternoon. The Gilroy Police Department said it started investigating the possibility of a card-skimming device at the gas station after being "inundated with credit-card fraud cases over the weekend."

The investigation revealed a majority of victims had used their credit, debit or ATM cards at the gas station, police said.

The Regional Enforcement Allied Computer Team (REACT) was contacted and located the skimming device, which was not visible from the outside of the gas pump, police said.

The other gas pumps were checked and no additional skimming devices were found at the location, police added.

"By best estimation, the skimmer was active at its location for at least a week, possibly longer, until its removal earlier today," police said. "If you recently purchased gas using a credit card/ATM at the gas station, check your bank statements to ensure there are no unauthorized purchases or money withdrawals."
