Coroner IDs Pedestrian From Gilroy Killed Sunday

The accident occurred in Morgan Hill and involved a suspected drunk driver.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office has identified a 37-year-old Gilroy man killed in a traffic collision in Morgan Hill on Sunday.

Police were called to Tennant Avenue near Juan Hernandez Drive at about 6:50 p.m. Sunday to a report of a collision between a pedestrian and vehicle.

A Morgan Hill man was driving west on Tennant Avenue after leaving U.S. Highway 101 and drifted to the right shoulder, where his vehicle struck Alberto Sanchez. Police and emergency medical personnel provided aid to Sanchez, but he died at the scene.

Sanchez was struck while he stood behind a vehicle he had been driving, police said. Inside Sanchez’s vehicle was a juvenile who was taken to a trauma center and later released to a family member.

Police arrested Edgar Benitez Martinez on suspicion of driving under the influence in the collision after a brief pursuit by an off-duty police officer, police said.
